The Unabomber has won

With all this technophobia and anti-science malarkey going on these days -- even though it is the 21st century -- I have to conclude that the Unabomber has won. I've noticed that when I mention potential technological advances and such on other tribes and what-have-you, most people respond in a very hostile manner. As if technological advancement is the height and depth of evil. They even disregard the irony of using the technology of the internet to express their anti-technology beliefs. Moreover, the pace of technological advancement is slowing down -- at least accoring to my estimation. Nuclear fusion should be available by now. Unfortunately -- due to this technological slow-down -- fusion may not arrive for decades or not at all. The first human Mars landing was supposed to happen in the mid 1980s. Now a human Mars landing may never happen either.

In this age of spectacular mediocrity, many people seems to be very happy to resist technological change despite the fact that change is an unavoidable consequence of exisitence. This resistence to change seems so strong to me that the Unabomber's dream of a return to pre-industrial technology could actually come true within the coming decades. And yes, I know the Unabomber is a brilliant mathematical genius. But the fact is that a lot of folks who aren't so smart agree with his manifesto which -- according to my judgement -- doesn't make sense.

Yul. Kind of makes you wonder what these people will think of technology if they were diagnosed with cancer, needed an organ transplant or how many of them have had lasek surgery?!?!

Of course the Unabomber violated his own anti-tech stance by building those home-made bombs of his. So I guess as long as the tech is used to destoy tech, then it's not a problem -- at least according to Unabomber standards.

All it takes is someone with intelligence, an agenda, and the ability to reach a mass amount of idiots and viola! Hmmm...almost sounds like our last two elections...

Ok. Now that is something I truly don't understand - people's fear of technological advancement....WTF?

well, is it fear, or is it resentment, born of nostalgia for a simpler time? is it fearful or is it romantic & possibly naive?

I'd say it's naive at least in part. Because the claim that the "old days" were better than the present -- depending on your definition -- is not true. Yes, there was no nuclear waste or petroleum pollution problems 200 years ago. But there was also the widespread practice of slavery and antibiotics weren't available either. Those who say the past was better than the present seem to forget that the past had its problems too.

i wasn't necessarily saying the past was better, just simpler.
the past had its problems, & the present has its. try knocking over a building w/a spear.
i'm not a complete technophobe, but it would be nice if people were being taught how to be civil & fucking human to each other at the same rate that technology advances, however much the unabomber may've slowed that advance. technology's nice, but aren't there more important things?
